Happy Friday! We made it through the short week (although anyone else feel it has been anything but short?!) which can only mean a weekend full of social events and parties is ahead of us – ha, who am I kidding – I’m lucky if I am still awake past 9pm these days. However, this weekend I am actually going out tomorrow night, for dinner no less which calls for a fancy pants outfit and is the reason this post came to be…
My go-to sartorial top of choice for everyday is a t-shirt or jumper but for an evening out I want something with a bit more to it. A ruffle, lace, a luxe fabric or a print, it doesn’t have to scream OUT OUT but given I go out so seldomly these days, when I do I want something that suggests I’ve made an effort and I’m not ‘Mummy’ for the night.
A nice top with jeans is my favourite combination – mainly because I hate being cold when I go out (comfort is king these days), I live in blazers and because it is the perfect outfit for a relaxed dinner with mates/husband/family in my opinion. Over the years I have curated a modest collection of tops that I wear on rotation but this season I have already picked up two new additions (almost doubling my collection!) from H&M including the top I’m wearing for this post. Neither was expensive and more importantly in light of the current climate, they can easily be dressed down with dungarees and trainers during the day.
I think it’s fair to say I’m far from alone in my plight to find the perfect top-with-jeans-outfit and it’s a topic I am often asked for help with by friends. So as always, I have styled up 4 different looks with high street items that I hope you will find helpful or indeed inspire you on your next night out…
Puff sleeves are everywhere this season and more flattering than you’d think. Balance them out by tucking your top into your jeans.
Create a beautiful silhouette and show off your waist with this belted linen top paired with skinny jeans.
Don’t be afraid to play with proportions and team this pretty floral cropped blouse with an oversized blazer and high waisted Mom jeans.
This classic scalloped top will be a versatile addition to your wardrobe. Go tonal in the evening with a cream blazer and statement earrings and then layer under dungarees during the day.
